Teeside University

Challenge

Johnsons completed an internal library relocation for Teesside University. The moves took place overnight to minimise disruption to the users of the library and included the following:

Sequentially pack, move and unpack 215,000 items of book stock

Dismantle 3,547 shelves

Reassemble 939 shelves

Solution

Restack

The decant was undertaken over 24 consecutive night shifts during the spring. We provided fitters who installed 839 shelves to the third floor and dismantled the 892 metres of shelving on the second floor.

Our packing team moved over 7,000 linear metres of book stock between floors one, two and three and relocated 87 double bays of racking on the second floor.

Due to the efficiency of the team, we completed the works ahead of the deadline.

Refurbishment

Due to our highly successful restack project, Johnsons were awarded the library relocation project during their refurbishment. Our staff were required to remove all floor stock and shelving from the second and third floors, reinstating it in the newly renovated floors. This included:

Sequential packing, relocation and unpacking of approximately 8,800 linear metres of literature and materials

Dismantling and reassembly of 2,477 shelves from second and third floors

Assembly of 3,402 shelves on ground floor using existing shelving

Dismantle, removal and recycling of approximately 2,780 green shelves from third floor library

Dismantling of 5,721 shelves at Brittan Building

Removal and recycling of 3,849 shelves from Brittan Building

Result

To ensure these final phases were carried out with the same precision and quality service as the first, we allocated the same team to complete both moves, including the same Project Manager. This meant the team knew the building very well; their familiarisation with the access routes, walkways, safety features and even some staff meant they were able to carry the project out in the most efficient manner.

Our flexible approach in relation to working out of hours meant our works didn’t disrupt the library users during their peak times, and for those using the library out of normal working hours, we provided information signage to advise of when and where the works were taking place so disruption to studies were kept to a minimum.

Overall, the entire project, encompassing a total of 18 months, was a huge success.
